Key features of 2009 SSC results

Key features of 2009 SSC results

The Secondary School Certificate examination, the first public examination of our country, appears with some common and new features every year. The common features are the domination of highest scorers; cent percent passed schools by the metropolitan city schools and the cadet colleges. These features hardly draw the attention of the education critics. Rather the uncommon ones and the status of rural schools make them more concerned. The number of dropped out pupils because of not getting chance in intermediate colleges due to the lack seats and for poverty is another matter of concern for them.

There are 4 lakh 63 thousand 300seats in 2 thousand 794 colleges of Bangladesh. Whereas,5 lakh 37 thousand and 878 students passed the SSC examination. The government colleges which take admission of intermediate students stands 241. Total of their seats show 92 thousands 386. The number of non-government colleges is 2 thousand 543. Total seats in these colleges are 3 lakh 70 914. According to this statistics, 75 thousands students will not get into any colleges. We talk about drop out. We hold meetings and seminars to stop drop out but this situation was not considered that due to the less number of seats in higher educational institutions, many students’ door for education gets closed. Not only that the GPA-5 holders will get admission opportunity in their desired colleges due to limited seats in those colleges. Necessarily, a scope of manipulating remains there.
In the city of Dhaka there are 135 educational institutions which hold intermediate classes and their seat capacity is 39 thousand 519. Students passed in the Dhaka board are one lakh seventy thousand 331. With GPA-5 and from GAP 4-5 holders are 64 thousands 848. The medium scorers of rural areas may have a good chance as the urban better colleges deep 10 percent seats for them. Notre Dame college can hold two thousand one hundred forty students, Viqarunnenssa school and college 990, Ideal college 650, Dhaka College one thousand one hundred, Holy Cross 490, Dhaka Commerce College 900, Goverentmn Science College 475, Bandunnessa College 820.Education minister has said that he has already held a meeting with the principals of colleges to deal with and tackle this problem. Possible solution may be to introduce double shift. Government desires to start the Intermediate class in the first week of July. And the admission procedure will be done by July 5. GPA will determine the merit of admission. If the same more than one student have the same GPA then, the GPA without fourth subject t will be considered.

BRAC Education Programme works in more than three thousand non-government rural secondary schools and it gives special support to the SSC examinees in the form of REMEDIAl and RAISE support. The low performing schools and poor guardians who cannot afford to make their wards prepared for the SSC examinations at the cost of extra money enjoy these supports. This year BRAC extended such kind of support to about five hundred rural schools and they show comparatively better performance in the public examinations. Rural schools need such kind of special support from the government, international organizations and other NGOs.

A total of 62,300 students got GPA-5 . The previous year this figure was 52500. This year total 10, 63 484 students appeared in the examination in 18888 centres. The grading system was introduced in 2001 when only 76 examinees secured GPA-5. The students and teachers could not cope with the newly introduced system which brought a doom for the meritorious students. However, with the passage of time all stakeholders have started getting used to it.

The number of schools with zero pupils passed came down to 72 from last year’s 91. Examinees expelled also continued to drop. Only 541 students were expelled this year against last years 707. As many as 10, 58674 students -- 556839 boys and 501835 girls sat for this years SSC and equivalent examinations and 750 538 of them passed. Commenting on this year’s SSC and equivalent results Education minister said, ‘ a positive change in the standard of education has been made even though it fell short of our exceptions.” He further said that they would introduce two hundred marks in English in madarssa education to eradicate the existing discriminations lying between general and madrassa education boards. Yes, it would be a timely and desired step if the government can make it true without making any dilly dallying process.
